Early cases of wild chimpanzee with blanched sclerae were thought to be anomalies due to some kind of illness or sport . However , a new critique has found that eye color was highly variable in a prominent group of wild chimpanzees at Ngogo in Kibale National Park , Uganda . Of 230 individual , 34 had blank sclerae , and for five of these this was visible even when the animal were looking straight ahead . For the other 29 , it was only detectable if they look go out to right .

“ White sclera is often considered a uniquely human trait in the scholarly literature and pop medium , ” wrote the author . “ Our study confirms that this is not the case . Almost 1 in 6 chimpanzees at Ngogo had full or fond lily-white sclerotic coat in at least one eye , which tended to be more seeable when gaze was averted rather than direct . Even a small amount of white or light sclera may make gaze direction more seeming . ”

The research builds on exist paper that have found thatgorillas sometimes have clean scleraetoo , and that actually the biggest optical difference between us and them is the elongation of the human middle .

In 2022 , anexperimenttested whether humans and Pan troglodytes could know apart the eye - gaze counseling in photos of both coinage in a computer job . Their results show that both humans and chimpanzees were better able to discriminate oculus - gaze direction in the pic of humans , and in photos of chimpanzees that had been altered to give them uniformly white sclerae and morose flag . These finding could therefore hold up the theory that how we react to the gaze of conspecifics , and how we practice ours to communicate , may have drive the phylogeny of the white sclerotic coat .

“ Uniform whiteness in the sclerotic coat thus alleviate the visibility of eye - regard instruction even across species , ” concluded the authors on the2022 newspaper . “ Our findings thus support but also critically update the central assumption of the gaze - signaling hypothesis . ”
