Happy 20th birthday, Tracy Flick!
Reese Witherspoonposted a sweet tribute to her 1999 movieElectionon Tuesday, sharing footage and a photo from the film to her Instagram.
The actress, 43, added the hashtag “#pickflick,” referencing her character Tracy Flick’s campaign slogan.
The clip Witherspoon shared to social media showed her character gearing up to run for student body president against fellow student Paul Metzler.
“He was no competition for me,” she says in the clip. It was like apples and oranges. I had to work a little harder, that’s all. You see, I believe in the voters. They understand that elections aren’t just popularity contests.”
Witherspoon also posted a poll on her Instagram Story, asking her followers if they would vote for Tracy Flick. “Has my vote” and “Only if there’s cupcakes” were the two options.
“I love this movie,”Salma Hayekwrote. “One of my favorite[s]. And you are Brilliant in it. Give me 100 years more of your talent. At least.”

Witherspoon, then 23, starred oppositeMatthew Broderickin the famous film. Broderick played a high school social studies teacher who enlisted Paul Metzler to run against Witherspoon’s character for student body president, causing the election of a lifetime as the two faced off for the title.
Electionwas not a box office success when it was first released, but the film was met with critical acclaim and has remained a fan favorite comedy ever since.
In 2014, director Alexander Payne told theHuffington Postthat former PresidentBarack Obama“has told me twice that it’s his favorite political film.”
