Jaguars may be beautiful , but they are alsoone of the most badassbig cats out there . They   eventake on crocodileswithout hesitation – and they do it very , very successfully . This   is something   a New Orleans zoological garden learned the intemperate manner on the dawning of July 14 , when Valerio , an adult male person jaguar , manage to escape his natural enclosure and go   on a deadly rampage .

The jaguar ’s   perceptiveness of freedom last less than an minute , according to a statement fromAudubon Zoo , but in that prison term he managed to kill six   of his fellow residents : four Lama pacos – Noel , Micia , Alexandria , and Lil Melody   –   one   fox describe Maggie Mae , and Elmo the emu . Three more animate being were injured , with pig the fox and Daisy the Lama pacos deplorably unite their friends in the great large nature modesty in the sky by the afternoon of Sunday , July 15 . The last onset dupe , a fox list Rusty , is cover to be recovering under a team of veterinarians .

The personnel casualty of Daisy is peculiarly poignant as she was Audubon ’s last living alpaca ,   reportsTime .

Valerio was reported missing from his enclosure at 7:20am ET , and by 8:15am he had been tranquillize and call for back to his " night house " . Although it was not immediately clear how   he get off , an inspection later suggested that the ceiling of the habitat had been compromise in some agency , allot to the official statement . Keeper wrongdoing seems not to have been to fault .

" We do drills annually and have protocols for this precise berth to assure that emergencies of this kind are resolved as safely and quickly as possible , " the zoological garden ’s statement explain . " This is a lamentable sidereal day for the Audubon family including our staff , volunteer , helper , and our community . We are offering heartache direction to our staff to ensure they are supported during this sentence . "

A Facebook military post from the zoo in February described Valerio as " implausibly wise " and a " great loveable goofball " . He was born in San Diego zoo in March 2015 , but moved to Audubon in October 2017 .

Luckily for Valerio , this history has a happy close – or , at least , as happy as we can anticipate under the circumstances .

" Nothing is going to bump to the panther itself , " explain Joel Hamilton , vice president and general curator of Audubon Zoo , in a video shared on the zoological garden ’s Twitter page . " Unfortunately , it was doing what jaguars do . We certainly are not going to euthanize the animate being over this . "
