The horrific vision that start the final chapter of Alan Moore ’s watchman ghost you long afterwards . But Zack Snyder ’s movie tones down that mental imagery , and screenwriter David Hayter says it ’s because of 9/11 . spoiler below .
As you in all likelihood already know , there ’s no giant squid at the death of Snyder ’s motion picture version . But that ’s not the only matter that ’s miss . The plastic film leaves out the gut - wrenching image that fill nine pages of the vivid novel , at the start of Chapter 12
In the script , a doomsday clock dripping with the blood of massacred New Yorkers is follow by in - your - face carnage . There are no words , just page after page of silent expression block in despair . soundbox are piled on top of bodies , hunched over street box and luxate out of doors of window . If you ’re familiar with the book , you know that the reality , for New Yorkers , has just end . The visually pick up images push onwards the concluding issue that the entire novel hinges upon : Is it ok to wipe out zillion to keep billions ? It ’s red and necessary … but it ’s not in the movie .
evidently these trope were deemed too graphic for Snyder ’s Watchmen . We asked Hayter why the movie does n’t depict the dead bodies in the aftermath of Ozymandias ’ scheme , while he was doing press for the film :
When did the ending change , and who was responsible for that ?
I change it . Because it was just me , and I did n’t have Zack Snyder . [ When I was working on the script ] the pressure were being put on me . “ Six main character reference . Can you cut it down to one ? Can you cut down all the flashback ? We do n’t like all this history . ” And I ’m like it’s … [laughs in unbelief ] What I would always say is , “ Yeah , I can write that movie , but it ’s going to be a different movie , and you ’re live on to have to pay off me again . ” And they did n’t need to do that .
I did understand the conclusion of the book , [ but ] there are a few issues that implement to the air pressure of filmmaking . I ’m always cognizant of the fact that when you ’re divvy up with the studio apartment and you ’re take them to put up 100 - plus million dollars , that that ’s a gravid thing . You ca n’t just say , “ I ’m an creative person and whatever . ” You ’re never run to work out , and that ’s not a smart way to make movies .
The ending of the al-Qur’an demonstrate just piles of corpses , bloody corpses in the middle of Times Square , mass hanging out of windows just mow down on a massive plate . To do that in a comic book , and exhaust it in 1985 , is dissimilar from doing it substantial lifetime , in a movie , and seeing all of these masses viciously massacred in the middle of Times Square post 2001 . That ’s a legitimate concern , and one that I deal .
If you ’re doing the movie for $ 40 million , fine – blinking bodies everywhere . And that ’s fine , and it ’s a niche film , and only the hard-core fans would go see it . But if you ’re doing it on this big of a scale , I just do n’t cogitate that ’s … I understand their reserve to put those images on screen .
So the studio had reservations about the ending , because of September 11 and because people would n’t be ready for it . But were n’t you distressed about changing the ending , as someone who loved the lifelike novel ?
Well no , because what I did , the way I sort of convert myself – And I do n’t really know what it looks like , because I ’ve only reckon a gravelly cut of the film , without all the FX in the ending – But what I did was say , “ What if they were all blown into the Hiroshima shadow , which are already set up in the book ? ” Then you’re able to see the destruction on a grand scale , you see all the particles floating in the aviation , but it ’s not so ugly . It ’s almost beautiful in its way . This destruction that is done in an artistic way , and it ’s also fed by the subject of the book and set up in there .
I would have like to have view the squid . I would have hump to have seen it exactly the way it was in the book – but I also felt the same pain sensation everyone else did survive here when [ September 11 ] occurred . My main years working on it were also 2000 to 2005 [ and 9/11 was a mess fresher in hoi polloi ’s minds justly afterwards ] . So it was n’t just the studios . That was something I did for the studios with out having to be pushed on it . ”
How did creative person Dave Gibbons , the talented creative person behind the lifelike novel , experience about those images vanish from the moving picture ? We asked him :
You line these panels that were full of carnage and blooming streets , and they ’re not in the flick . How did you finger as an artist , about not being capable to see the actual destruction ?
It relates to the whole question about violence in the whole matter . I mean the consequence of force should be shown graphically , just to show that violence is unpleasant . It is n’t just [ that ] you get a small spot of blood , and then you put a striation aid on it and you ’re all proficient . You know I have n’t seen the final cut of the destruction of the picture show , the version that I saw the end was n’t finished so I do n’t know precisely what we do see but my memorial of it was , I did get a sense of this wholesale destruction .
I suppose you also have to say that in a mode , post 9/11 , it ’s a very tender orbit anyway . So I think that might change how you would treat it , if you were go to do it .
All in all , using 9/11 as an excuse to alter the ending of the flick does n’t seat right with me – specially since the film already shows a little girl in a dog ’s mouth and plenty of gore earlier in the picture . Why spend so much time remaining unfeigned to the leger , only to drop the ball in the concluding act ? I sympathise with film - Maker who have to knead with the studios , but they could have judge harder to encounter them halfway . Perhaps it did n’t have to be as graphic as the novel , but there must have been some way the filmmaker could have show the biography that had been withdraw . The loss of those image create more muddiness , and debase the seriousness of the movie ’s grand finale .
