Unsettling and distinctive sounds made by Asiatic honey bee during attacks of elephantine hornets might be an alarm sign for the beehive to deploy justificative standard .
Attacks by jumbo hornets ( Vespa soror ) are experiential threats to colonies of honey bees ( Apis cerana ) . “ It ’s alarming to hear ! ” Heather Mattila , a co - author of the subject and a researcher at Wellesley College , distinguish me when I asked her to describe the unmistakable distress signaling . “ It ’s characterized by speedy bursts of high - pitch sounds that change erratically in frequency — they’re quite harsh and noisy . ”

The new detected alarm signal , call an “ antipredator pipe , ” was isolated from other sounds , including other acoustic bee signaling , by looking at visual representation of audio known as spectrograms .
“ These images show the different dimension of the sounds that the bees make , even if they overlap in time because many bees were signaling at once , ” Mattila explained . “ We looked through all of our recordings to get good model of antipredator pipes that were clear of other sound so that we could characterize their acoustic properties . Then it became easy to recognize them in more helter-skelter moments , when lots of sound were being made . ”
By “ pipe , ” Mattila is refer to sound made by bees when they vibrate their wings or thorax . The team select to call it an “ antipredator pipework ” as the sign appear to be linked exclusively to attacks of elephantine hornet .
That say , the scientist are n’t entirely sure if or how the warning signal signal alters the bees ’ deportment .
