ripe tidings , everyone : Google is looking out for us ! It does n’t want a cleaning golem to knock over grandma ’s vase .
That ’s one of the potentially dangerous scenario Google engineers search ina new paperon “ concrete problem in AI safety . ” For some strange reason , the researchers choose to illustrate these dangers using the model of a cleansing golem and not a sentient superintelligence that want to enslave us .
In terms of elegance , they do n’t guard a taper to Isaac Asimov’sThree Laws of Robotics , but I guess that ’s to be expected when you ’re writing an academic paper and not a questioning science - fiction novel that does n’t actually have to obey the laws of physics .

Here are the five problems Google thinks will be important to focus on :
Avoiding negative side effects , or , “ how do we ensure a cleansing robot does n’t knock over a vase because it ’s quicker to do so ? ”
Avoid advantage hacking , or , “ how can we ensure the cleanup robot does n’t just insure jam instead of cleaning ? ”

Scalable oversight , or , “ how do we ensure the cleanup robot learns quickly and does n’t require too often where the mop is ? ”
Safe geographic expedition , or , “ how do we make certain the robot explore cleaning strategies but does n’t put a swab in an electrical wall socket and burn down the entire mansion down ? ”
Robustness to distributional shift , or , “ how do we teach the robot to recognize when its skills are not useful in a dissimilar environs ? ”

mayhap the cleanup - robot examples make sense give thatEric Schmidt does n’t cogitate very highly of AI fear . ( Then again , if that ’s the sheath , why is Googleworking on a killing switch ? )
Anyway . Google , if you figure out how to chop-chop teach all these thing , I be intimate some parents who might want your aid , and some tike who still spend all their time endeavor to hide their mess rather of cleaning up . I mean , kids who have not yet been programmed to avoid “ reward hacking . ”
