A women ’s volleyball team gets run by a band of malevolent , woods - dwelling degenerates in girl With Balls , a first-rate - schlocky French ode to ‘ 80s repulsion that ’s wildly mismatched and a little offensive , but still has some scattered second of awing .
Directed by Olivier Afonso , the film starts with a heap of excitement and potential — a fourth - paries - breaking narrator uproariously lays out the plot of the movie in strain . That ’s right away followed by a wild , upbeat , combo credit sequence and volleyball game game acquaint all the main characters . The squad then forget the game in their RV , gets lost , and commence shit with a orphic chemical group of psychotic . essentially , in its first act , there ’s zero fat on the film . It bang where it wants to get to and it get there with style . When the film does get there , though , that ’s when things take a turn for the worse .
Once the girls piss off the creepy dudes and run off into the Ellen Price Wood screaming , girl With Balls loses its momentum . From early on on in the picture , Afonso characterize the volleyball squad as witty and smart . We jazz they ’re resourceful , we recognise they are champion , and you ’d expect them to mop up the base with these dipshits . But they do n’t . Instead , the girls mostly move like typical incapacitated horror moving-picture show victims as the flick morphs into an luxuriant , insistent unfounded goofball chase , and the characters get turn on each other instead of on the tough guys .
With that comes plenty of gross kills , gushing lineage , and barely habilitate woman , all of which feels very much like an ‘ 80s horror movie — the form of moving picture where a girl can spike a volleyball game and basically kill a guy . Certainly , Afonso was n’t aiming for anything serious here and when he hits that gull , there ’s play to be had . However , for the most part , the film does not do its fictional character or first act justice . The squad gets separated , everyone panics , and the pleasantly tinny tone melts aside . At no point should we be worried that these girls could actually lose . They should be kick ass and explode head . Which , of course , they do on social occasion . But that flimsy slip in tone and perspective almost makes the film finger serious , which it apparently is n’t , and that really drag it all down .
Girls With Balls is so all over the place that by the third bit , your mind will likely just grow off and embrace that there ’s something inherently nurse about watching a girl ’s volleyball game squad agitate a lot of guy rope who look like low - budget Tusken Raider cosplayers . It help too that the actress are really charismatic and exciting to watch , and that the one recognizable cheek , Denis Lavant ( Holy Motors ) , is forbidding as the evil leader who never speak a single word .
girl With Balls had its world premiere at Fantastic Fest 2018 , but it does not yet have a U.S. sacking date . If or when that happens , keep in mind that it ’s a hunky-dory moving picture to put on TV and half - sentry for its fun persona . But overall … it ’s not great .
