After the Twilight jury at San Diego Comic Con , there was a huge surprise — the first footage from The Host , the adaptation of Stephenie Meyer ’s alien - invasion novel directed by Andrew Niccol ( Gattaca , Now ) . And the good news is , The legion looks like a beautifully shot movie with some endearing action at law sequence . There ’s just one major , huge problem with it .

The Host make shoes in a world where foreign sponge have successfully invade , fill the body of almost all humans . The leech pacify and see to it their human hosts — and the result , in Niccol ’s hand , is a aseptic world full of cement blocks . The alien - possessed humans all have eldritch swirly aristocratical eye and a creepy-crawly affect , and they make out shininess . The foreign “ Seekers ” wear all white suits and drive lustrous golden cars .
We saw several rough scenes from The emcee , and it looks stunning .
The footage begin with Melanie ( Saoirse Ronan ) being chased by the aliens . She ladder up and up a stairway , try on to escape , but she ’s at bay — so she keep run and throws herself out the window .
Then she wakes up — and she ’s perfectly well . But she ’s been plant with an foreign parasite . The “ Healer ” who implanted her require what she wants to be called . “ Call me … Wanderer , ” she says . Ronan does a great job depend spooky and creeptastic as an alien - possessed lady friend .
Then Wanderer is in a briefing , where another alien is severalise her that almost every human has been “ successfully use up ” — but there are still scoop of resistance , let in one which Melanie , Wanderer ’s host , belong to to . So Wanderer sets about digging into Melanie ’s memories of growing up in Louisiana with her dad and her brother . We see Young Melanie on a skateboard , with a cute dog . They avoided the first wave of settlement , but then the Seekers come for Melanie ’s mob — so her male parent blew his brains out , while Melanie and her brother hid under the docks in the water . The father killed himself , so they could n’t implant him with a parasite and encounter out how to get his children .
And then , as Wanderer replays Melanie ’s computer memory of being on the run with her brother and joining the resistance , Melanie starts to resist . And this is where we confront the major job with this film — we get word Melanie ’s vox yelling at Wanderer inside her mind , and it ’s kind of a jackass voiceover matter . It works about as well as you might ask . We glimpse bits of Melanie among the resistance , including dancing with her boyfriend , Jared . There ’s sweet plinky guitar music .
Next , we see Melanie drive in the desert look for Melanie ’s resistance friend — and she regain them . She ’s aim prisoner , and we see them border her through the desert , blindfolded . One of them is carry a shovel . The desert landscapes are gorgeously dart . Then Wanderer waken up in a cave , with her brother watch over over her . The other electrical resistance humans want to come and bolt down her — including her fellow . But Melanie ’s brother resists , and it turns into a Dutch hoe . Soon the other humans are beating Melanie ’s sidekick , and Wanderer shouts that they can do what they want to her , but leave her brother alone . “ Fight back ! ” Melanie ’s voice shouts in Wanderer ’s head , as the resistance mankind endeavor to attack both Wanderer and Melanie ’s brother .
And then there ’s a scattergun clap , and an old guy say “ eve everyone . I detest to remind you , but this is my place , and you are my guests . For the second , she is too . I do n’t take kindly to my guests strangling each other . ” Everybody stops .
And then we learn a boastful chase prospect , where two humans in a pickup truck are being chased by Seekers with helicopters and sports machine . The humans keep take at the helicopter with a rifle , with limited results . There ’s a unbalanced car pursual , where the aliens keep dogging the lone human being . “ Do n’t get caught , ” mutters one of two humans watching all of this from a distance . At last , the humans are fence , and they come to a blockage . They look at their machine hitman , endeavor to resolve whether they can fritter their direction out — and then , rather , they drive into a concrete divider at top speed .
All in all , the footage was gorgeous and just the form of dystopian weirdness that Andrew Niccol does so well — except that the “ Melanie talk in Wanderer ’s principal ” affair seemed inescapably punk and silly .
