Last night ’s Eureka episode had a balmy case of the grey goo , as Carter and company had to lay off a bunch of runaway mini - bots before they devour all alloy in sight . It also give away the concealed danger of wear off neckties .

“ Of Mites and Men ” observe Allison still recuperate from last workweek ’s brain - jacking . Much to her own consternation , she ’s still on enforce medical leave , and she ’s fed up both with Carter doting over her and Senator Wen ( SGU ’s Ming - Na ) refusing to trust her . The Astraeus pick mental process is still in full swing , which lands Fargo , Jo , Holly ( Felicia Day ) , and Dr. Parrish ( Wil Wheaton ) in a bantam subterranean sleeping room – one that only gets tinier when Zane shows up as an interloper .

Since Jo is busy with the tryout , Carter gets transfer to head of GD security measures , and he ’s straightaway confront with the case of the disappearing tungsten . ( Between this and the osmium - centric “ Up in the Air ” a few week ago , Eureka is really teaching us the note value of the transition metals . ) Despite how much he clearly hates have on a suit and tie – a feeling that is more than vindicated by the end of the episode – Carter is particularly on his secret plan this week , almost immediately realizing that Zane ’s tiny , bug - like structure hint have gone haywire , taking their original club to work up the Astraeus spaceship and extending that indefinitely , which have in mind they ’ll just keep consuming tungsten and build starship part until … well , there ’s is n’t really an “ until ” to verbalise of .

Eureka did n’t quite go full grey goo with this instalment , and I kind of wish they had . I ca n’t quite put my finger on it , but this felt a minuscule jejune . Part of that , I think , is the show has experimented with its physical body quite a bit this season – the opening “ Lift - Off ” played likean Apollo 13 court , “ Up in the Air ” wasan hr of unbent - up goofy comedy , “ Omega girl ” wasthe conspiracy thriller , and “ Glimpse ” was … well , “ Glimpse ” wasjust all sort of awful .

“ Of Mites and Men ” , like “ Glimpse ” before it , feels like a more straightforward example of the Eureka convention . There ’s nothing incorrect with that , but I ’ve find to admit they do n’t grab my attention as much as the other episodes do . There ’s also no mode to avoid some defeat when , after a big game - change sequence like “ Omega female child ” , we ’re reasonably much right back where we set about , and the biz has n’t really changed .

Obviously , Eureka is n’t the sort of show that ’s going to follow up “ Omega girl ” with , say , an hour of Carter and fellowship hunting down Beverly Barlowe – that is n’t a comely expectation , and I ’m not even certain I would want Eureka to be that variety of show – but it is a piffling weird that she is n’t even mentioned in this episode . There ’s also no followup on Zoe ’s story or Carter ’s decisiveness to tell her about the altered timeline . I can understand the logic of those decisions and accept they ’re in keep with what Eureka is , and I imagine they ’ll clean these write up up later on , but still … it all leaves me want more .

That say , it ’s not as though “ Of Mites and Men ” is feign last week ’s installment did n’t bump , and we see two main piece of fallout here : Allison is trying to regain the trust of those around her , and Senator Wen is now guide the show . The former is a very Eureka way to handle the side effect of “ Omega Girls ” , because it ’s all about low - key character moments . I ’ve enounce this before , but I ’m continually shanghai by how maturely the Allison / Carter kinship is publish ( the distinct want of a cutesy portmanteau is also courteous ) . This instalment could have have their first big blow - up fighting , but that sorting of melodrama would have environ pretended . I think I just like seeing a TV couple disagree without being disagreeable , or randomly acting like a twain of lovesick teenagers .

Ming - Na is interesting as Senator Wen – in previous iterations of the show , I ’d say she ’s the token mystical entrant who does n’t entirely purchase into Eureka ’s magic spell and may have subterranean motives . And while she definitely is n’t an to a fault courteous mortal , she also seems fairly straightforward about what she wants . It ’s hard to argue that she ’s really require for anything unreasonable — Carter likely should wear a case , and she ’s probably right to be conservative about reinstate Allison — other than the fact that she ’s opposing our heroes in doing so . in good order now , we do n’t have too much of a sensation of her as a character , but I ’m optimistic we ’ll get to see a bit more of her in the next few installment .

As for the episode ’s other handsome plotline … well , there ’s no fashion to bemuse Fargo , Jo , Zane , Holly , and Parrish into a crowded room and not have some playfulness with that . Fargo ’s flunkey / one - time bane Larry makes for a most amusing torturer , and all the quality get some beneficial moments in . As always , I ’m please by the assholery of Dr. Parrish , including his insistence on call in Jo “ Number One ” ( which I keep wanting to think of as a TNG reference , but maybe I ’m just being hypnotized by Wil Wheaton ’s lush Riker beard ) . Parrish wants to restrain Zane as they would any stowaway ( something Zane enunciate he ’d like to see them render ) , and his insistence on go along on close up origami cranes while the chamber give around him borderline on the psychotic .

We also get to learn enough more about Holly , include her unbelievably flexible marijuana cigarette – which Fargo is very interested in – and her bladder the size of it of a water buffalo ’s – it ’s , uh , less clear what Fargo remember about this . Fargo continues to show himself a adequate to loss leader , and Zane prove himself to be the well - muscle beguiler we always know him to be . I ca n’t really say I gleaned anything too mysterious about the reference from all this , but it was a lot of playfulness . Indeed , I ’d say that sum up up this sequence fairly well – I had fun , and there is n’t too much more to say . That really is n’t such a regretful thing , particularly because Eureka no longer seems to be making a use of these episodes .
