Disney is putting a “modern spin” on the new live-actionHerculesmovie.
“It will certainly pay homage to the original with a more modern spin on it,” said Russo, who is producing the film with his brother Anthony, with whom he directed the new Netflix movieThe Gray Man.
“What Anthony and I love about the original is how funny and subversive it is,” he added. “I think we try to embrace that sense of humor in the remake.”
In May, Anthony opened up toColliderabout why he and his brother wanted to produceHercules.
“Both us and our kids areHerculesfanatics,” he explained. “And we had heard that Disney was interested in revisiting it and we’re in love with the original. We made a case as to why we felt we would be right to produce that film and here we are.”
Anthony, who also co-directed movies for Marvel with Joe, added that the live-action film will not be an exact retelling of the original. “I think you always have to bring something new to the table, because from our perspective as storytellers, it’s not compelling for us to do a literal translation.”

“We’ve already done that with our Marvel films. We don’t do literal translations of the comics because we feel like if you want that story you can go read that story,” he continued. “We’re going to give you a different story.”

There have been no cast announcements forHercules. However,Jennifer Hudsontossed her hat in the ringduring aWIREDinterviewin August 2021.
“Y’all, listen close — all myDreamgirlscast members, this is a fun fact, have been in Disney films,” she noted, referring to Beyoncé’s role in 2019’sThe Lion King, Jamie Foxx in last year’sSoul, Anika Noni Rose inThe Princess and the Frogand Eddie Murphy inMulan.
“Where’s my Disney role?” Hudson mused. “But, I was Calliope, the head muse, on a Disney cruise ship, so that means I’m ready for my part. ‘We are the muses, goddesses of the arts and proclaimers of heroes. Who put the glad in gladiators? Hercules!’ That was me, Calliope. So I’m ready, just roll the camera. You ain’t even got to send a script, I don’t need the music. I’m ready to shoot. So I’ll just wait for your call, thank you.”
