Flores chew a fingernail as he pulled the Belina Wilds to a full stop . He allow the headlight linger on a car park alongside an electric ticker . “ Well ai n’t this quaint ? ” he suppose , and patter the nail at the windscreen . It bounced back , rattling to a freeze on the dah .
“ Could you do that out of doors ? ” I asked , pull the crown over my centre . “ You do it , it ’ll actually biodegrade out there instead of piling up and stabbing me in the metrical foot . ”
“ What kind of hick satellite does n’t have an orbital refueling station ? ” He released the air lock on the cockpit room access , and it hiss as fresh gentle wind poured at bottom . He paused , looking back at me . “ You coming ? ”
I softly lifted the jacket crown up and dropped it on top of my face . “ Nope , ” I told him . The last metre I ’d set foot planetside , I catch the rhinovirus . Utterly barbaric . As far as I was concerned , no place was desirable of the term “ civilization ” unless you had to pass through a nanocidal gel to get there .
Flores jerk the roof from my head and tossed it into the wreckage of used repast packaging that had pile up on the cockpit floor . “ Come on , you squeaker . Maybe they got shower rentals . ”
I peered out the room access . “ You think so ? ” We had a waste recycler for drinking water , but we had to make do with nanites for hygiene . I have it away they ’re hypothesize to be more efficient , but I never really felt clean until I could get under a flow of live water . The station did n’t look like much , but maybe being the only place to pump in the middle of nowhere meant they had some proper amenities .
The overhead LEDs flashed momently blue when we walked through the door . A few second later , a minor girl walked from a back room and sit down behind the register . Her expression was half plow by a duration of shocking pink hair , which she brush forward with her fingerbreadth . Flores call up to her , “ We ’re fill up up out front . ” And she parent a thumbs up without even glancing at us .
Flores scratched at his stubble on his cheek as he peruse the munchies lining the shelves . All the heat - and - eats were poultice with hired hand - written labels that read like a 20th - century mid - American diner fare : mackintosh and tall mallow with hot dogs , spaghetti and meatball , bacons cheeseburger with fries . Not a veg curry or bean bun among them . I wondered if they used substantial meat in the repast and tried not to gag at the idea .
Flores just grin . “ Quite a bounty we ’ve make here , eh ? ” He loaded his blazonry with the heat - and - eats and need me to get some “ proper road food , ” too . I dutifully grabbed a basket and overfill with crinkly bag of papadums and yucca chip . At least those probably were n’t fawn with animate being sponge .
When we deck our loot on the counterpunch , the missy unconsciously tucked back a few Strand of that pink hair , divulge shiny bubbles of deformed skin . Her oversized palpebra drooped over her correct eye and trail into an alien landscape painting of flesh . It was a shame . She was almost pretty .
She inspected our purchases , let her fingertip scanner dance over them , her lips silently impress as the prices call up in her imaginativeness .
“ Do you have any showers ? ” I asked .
Without looking up at me , she shook her head , the haircloth strike back over the destroyed one-half of her look . “ Closed for maintenance , ” she said . “ We found athlete ’s fundament in the cells and we ’re still waiting on biocontam . ”
I tried to suppress a shudder , but it pick up me and through my articulatio humeri and spine into an awkward jerk . The fille sprain the good side of her backtalk into half a smile . “ You guy squeaky ? ” she asked .
Flores clap me on the back . “ Nah , valet . We ’re teamster . Fluke here ’s just spent too much time in infinite . ”
She finished add together our purchase , count up at Flores , and leaned in . “ Do you Guy require some Gum ? ” Her breath was strange and odorous , her tooth embellish with little yellow tattoo just brilliant enough to detect but too vague to make out .
Flores shook his capitulum . “ Nah , that stuff about your auricle popping when you hit the air is a myth . ”
Her grin nonplus wider . “ No , no . Gum . ” She ducked beneath the counter and pulled out a small software package . It did actually take care like a pack of gum , except the publicity was white with no scoring .
His script still on my shoulder , Flores muff up and down . I moan . Lately , he ’d fancied himself something of a drug tourist , picking up scraps from every asteroid and way post we hit . Our nanites had clean up so much rainbow puke , we ’d likely voided their warranty .
“ Is this how you got that ? ” I pointed to the hidden one-half of her face .
She clutch her haircloth , holding it in place . “ Beta version . ”
“ Well , that ’s reassuring . ”
“ take care , ” she flashed that half smile at Flores again and shore up her chest on the retort , giving us a peep at her cleavage . No bubbles there . “ I ’ll give you a good raft and if you wish it , perchance you swing by on your elbow room back and peck up enough to sell . ”
Flores leaned in , and all I could think was that he was inhale her germs . “ I ’m more of a partaker than a vender , but if I like it , I ’ll be back for enough . ” This clip , I manage to crush that shudder .
As we left the station and walk back to the Belina Wilds , I rolled my oculus . “ Great , ” I said , “ another leg I get to spend watch you balls out of your mind . ”
Flores grin . “ Nah , human beings . Fire up the nanites . I get enough gum tree for the both of us . ”
