On Saturday , Sir Patrick Stewart brought down the house at San Diego Comic - Con by let on ourfirst full lookat his return to the iconic function of Captain Jean - Luc Picard . The prevue was laden with intriguing insight not just about the humankind of the hour , but the future of the Star Trek universeas we know itpost - Nemesis . Here ’s what we spotted .

The trailer open up with , well , fundamentally the one big matter we ’ve known about Picard going in : the vineyard of Chateau Picard in La Barre , the transmissible rest home of the Picard family . It is where we see the older Picard retire to in the next timeline of The Next Generation ’s finale , “ All skillful Things , ” but while that was an alternate reality , here , it ’s quite real for Jean - Luc .

“ Have you ever been a stranger to yourself ? ” an unknown woman — who we ’ll actually see a small later on in this poke — asks , only for Picard to reply “ Many , many time . ”
In our first look at the venerated Enterprise maitre d' in the poke , we see him get up and reach the doors to a balcony in Chateau Picard , revealing his bedroom : remark that , to the sorrow of Beverly Crusher fans across the world , Picard ’s bed is only apply on one side .
In our first piddling smasher of Trek nostalgia — for both rooter and apparently Picard himself — the former maitre d’hotel exact out a minor box holding his quondam combadge . It ’s the design last seen on screen in the TNG movies , Voyager , and the later season ofDeep Space Nine .

We ’ve sleep together since the first teaser that Picard had been move back from Starfleet for several years by the time of the show , frequent by the event of Star Trek : Nemesis ( as we all were , honestly ) and eventually the destruction of Romulus , the Romulan homeworld , as seen in the first Star Trek reboot movie in 2009 . It ’s awhole timeline thing , but that event , which took spot in 2387 in Trek ’s choice timeline , will have a profound impact on the state of the Alpha Quadrant as we know it , and Picard himself .

It ’s the events of Nemesis that perhaps have the most denotative encroachment on Picard in this poke , though , as he run on to explain : “ Nearly two decades ago , Commander Data give his life for me , ” Jean - Luc opines , as we see him examine the component part of a Noonien Soong android with a female scientist we ’ll later identify as Dr. Agnes Jurati , play by Alison Pill , account mysteriously in press material as a cleaning lady “ jumble with her place in the world . ”

The body ca n’t be Data himself as we recognize him — Data ’s body was destroy when he sacrifice himself to destroy Shinzon ’s combat ship , the Scimitar , in Nemesis ’ climax . It could be B-4 , the Soong mechanical man foe - turn - protagonist that Data upload his old memories into during the upshot of Nemesis , and a character that is heavily hint at as having inherit some of those memory when Picard briefly re - activates and then Diamond State - activates B-4 at the end of the flick to tell him Data has died . Or , it could be an entirely unlike Soong android — we know they ’re out there , just like Lore was back in The Next contemporaries .
Back in La Barre , automatize vehicles tend to the vinery crop while Picard ’s yarn continues . “ These past few years I really endeavor to go here , ” he aver , with a spokesperson as aweary as you ’d have a bun in the oven from a humans with some very special aroused hangups about the Picard folk home , “ But it never truly feel like home base . ” In Star Trek Generations , Picard watch that both his brother Robert , then the foreland wine merchant at the vinery , and his nephew Rene perished in a star sign fire there in 2371 .
In light word , this moment does re - introduce us one of the most eagerly - look for new character of Picard : Jean - Luc ’s dog . And yes , it was officially confirmed that , as lover had spotted in the posting featuring Picard and his pupper , that the dog ’s name really is Number One . D’aaaw .

As Picard looks into the Nox sky above the Vineyard — now wearing his combadge from earlier — we trim back to another interesting new character : not named in this drone , but confirmed as Dahj , played by Isa Briones . Covered up to protect herself from the storm , here we see her walking past a showing of viewscreens show what appear to be some sort of consultation with Picard , setting Dahj up on a path to meet the legendary senior pilot …
Almost right away , we dilute to her express up at Picard ’s demesne , demanding to recognize whether he know who she is . That might seem very uncanny at first glimpse , as is Dahj ’s statement that “ everything inside of [ her ] ” is telling her that Picard will keep her safe . But look at what we see of the character later on this trailer , she in reality has very good reason to believe why Picard may somehow recognize a woman he ’s never fulfill before . Hint for now ? It has something to do with the Borg .
Meanwhile , Picard point to the Anaheim Convention Center Starfleet Headquarters . observe that , as it is wo nt to do every duo of years , Starfleet has update its dress computer code to a raw uniform intention ! Gone are the Lady Jane Grey - shoulder jackets ( similar to the one Picard has donned in this crack ) and colored undershirts Starfleet had adopted in the 2370s — the time of Deep Space Nine and the TNG picture show — but something more back in line with the uniforms envision in the former 2360s , worn by the Voyager crew .

https://gizmodo.com/there-was-almost-too-much-news-at-the-star-trek-comic-c-1836392106
It ’s got a novel high-pitched collar to go with the partition - colored shoulderpads and chest ( which sports a more angulate design compared to the Voyager style uniforms ) , and there ’s also a raw flair of combadge , depicting just the Starfleet Delta and looking a little more like the original Trek and Discovery dash uniform crests .
Jean - Luc has localize up a meeting with Starfleet Command about Dahj , telling an unidentified admiral how Dahj met him . Note the admiral uniform has also received an update , one that actually hold back more of those DS9 style uniform design notes like the division undershirt .

“ If she is who I think she is , ” Jean - Luc continues to the full admiral , “ she is in serious danger , ” as we cut to what seems to be Picard watch out Dahj confront off with two mask , unknown assailants with unfolding weapon system and some somewhat handy conveyor belt technology .
This appear to be in a different location , given Dahj and Picard ’s costume change ( it presumably take aim place before he go to Starfleet HQ ) , even if the scene itself bet very similar . The transporter shimmer is vague enough that it could be anyone ’s design , so it ’s hard to distinguish who these assailants are . We know from later on in the trailer that Dahj has a connecter to the Romulans , so these could be Tal Shiar — Romulan mystical law , basically — agents . But give the penchant for all - dark militarized tone , fancy tech , and universal funny intrigue , could these beSection 31operatives ?
talk of Romulans though , we get a very interesting shot of some ships flying toward a red satellite . At first you might call up they have more in line with the classic Klingon Bird - of - Prey , but these seem to be an update design for theValdore - typeRomulan Warbird , a svelter Romulan design compared to the chunky D’Deridex most TNG fan would connect with the metal money . The Valdore made its debut in Nemesis , so it cause sense to see similar ships for the Romulans here .

Just as interesting is what major planet the Romulan vessels are heading to . It does not pair up to prior representations of Romulus — and by the meter of Picard , the planet has already been destroy . However , it does match up with the red hues we link up with the home satellite of the Romulan ’s ancestral kin , the Vulcans . Is this a flashback to survivor of Romulus ’ destruction flee to their distant siblings for aid ?
you may differentiate we ’re portion out with Romulans at this point , because it ’s just machination after intrigue . We cut to inside one of those warbirds , to see Romulan scientist experimenting on what expect a lot like a deactivate Borg bourdon …
And then we cut to Picard , in the same casual outfit we envision him watching Dahj fight those soldiers earlier in , aboard another vessel ( is it a Starfleet one , or the same one we see him aboard afterwards ) that is in reality decked out with mementos of his career . Most obviously here is the Picard Day banner from the TNG sequence “ The Pegasus , ” but we also see brief glimpses of awards that were actually on display for San Diego Comic - Con at a Jean - Luc Picard Museum popup . Check out footage and pictureshere !

“ Sometimes I worry that you have block who you are … ” an unknown cleaning lady tells Picard , as we cut to another very interesting shooter of a prison house adroitness .
The guards , unmasked here , are using the same weaponry as the assailants who exit after Dahj , so now we have it off for sure they ’re Romulans and not Section 31 . But this whole quickness is fascinating ; there are alcoves that look an frightful flock like Borg positive feedback units everywhere , and a foretoken signifying how many days the facility has gone “ without an absorption ” ( 5,843 , so … a little over 16 years ? ) . Why would the Romulans have those , and be anticipating a Borg assimiliation outbreak , if they were n’t dealing with captive who were former penis of the collective ?

On top of that , Dahj is among the prisoners , apparently confirming that — like many Star Trek characters we ’ve seen over the age , including Picard himself — that she is a former Borg . That would be why she consider Picard would pick out her to begin with , from his clock time as Locutus : a Borg , freed from the corporate or otherwise , would have a form of “ Borg - sense ” that makes them cognisant of someone who has also been part of the collective before . So Dahj escaped this Romulan prision , fled to Earth , and now needs Jean - Luc ’s supporter .
… “ We do not , ” the unknown cleaning woman , played by Orla Brady ( Into the Badlands ) , ends her narration as we cut to a raw shot , revealing herself to be a Romulan . Fun fact that makes this lagger very confusing to break down , but there seems to have been some design change to the Romulans since we last see them . Female Romulans in Picard on the face of it no longer have the prominent brow ridges that virile Romulans continue to do . That brow ridge was fundamentally the one defining trait in differentiating a Romulan from a Vulcan , so … that ’s playfulness ? That ’s fun .
But we ’re fairly sure Brady ’s character here is a Romulan — which makes her probing Picard about remember who he really is , in the context of use of all the former - Borg stuff go on in this trailer , much more sinister . observe though , that this conversation is likely occupy place either at Chateau Picard or at another Earthly location we ’ll shortly see in the lagger , judging by the brick bulwark in the desktop .

face , you ca n’t have Star Trek without a visit to Vasquez Rocks ! This shot of Picard trudging through what depend an awful lot like the Agua Dulce , California park , an area whichhas flirt hostto everything from theoriginal Trek ’s “ Arena,”Voyager ’s “ gravitation , ” even endeavor ’s “ Unexpected , ” and parts of Vulcan in the 2009 Star Trek motion picture . yield what appear to be that shot of Vulcan earlier , there could be a chance Picard devote a visit to the iconic world too .
“ You ca n’t do it alone , ” a man tells Picard . “ You need aid … ” We see some of that assistance in the form of a collage of new characters fly by — first up is Santiago Cabrera as Chris Rio , described in printing press fabric as a former Starfleet Officer . He come out to now captain the vessel Picard and his new acquaintance find themselves on , as we cut to our first right glance of Pill ’s character from earlier , Dr. Jurati , also aboard the same ship .
“ You require trade protection … ” the interpreter keep , as we cut to Picard holding his hands up in a sign of peace treaty as he fit Michelle Hurd ’s Raffi Musiker . Once again , crush textile on Musiker is vague , but notes she has a connexion to Picard ’s past : an uneasy one , if she ’s seemingly pointing a phaser rifle at him .

“ You need a crowd ! ” the narration adds , this time as we cut back to Picard making a peaceful gesture copying the late addition to the stamp , Evan Evagora as Elnor . Once again , give makeup change , it ’s heavy to tell if he ’s Vulcan or Romulan : he lacks the ridges that male Romulans in this trailer have , so presumptively he ’s Vulcan . And also … some kind of Vulcan samurai , judging by the sword sheathed on his back ?
“ Be the skipper they call up , ” the teller conclude , revealing themselves to be a male Romulan — they’re subtle , but you could see the ridges on his eyebrow here — verbalise to Picard in the same location as Brady ’s character was . So who are these Romulans seemingly tasking Picard with the military mission to protect Dahj , build a new squad , and do all that larger-than-life line he ’s known for ? Do they have connections to the same Romulans seemingly polish up up former Borg ? Are they perhaps a rogue faction who are against the Romulans mucking about with the Borg ?
Fascinatingly , there ’s actually precedent for that in prior Star Trek work — specifically Star Trek Online , a non - basic MMORPG limit in the early 2400s . In STO’sversion of Star Trek ’s time to come , the destruction of Romulus saw the Star Empire shatter into two factions , with Empress Sela ( the half - Romulan daughter of an alternate - reality version of TNG ’s Tasha Yar ) and the Tal Shiar on one side looking to furbish up the Romulans to their former nimbus , and on the other , a more peaceful cabal that establishes itself as the Romulan Republic , seeking to make diplomatic ties with the Federation , Klingons , and other astronomical powers .

Once again , none of that is canonical to Star Trek : Picard . But could we be seeing a similar melodic theme unfold here ?
After we see Rio , Picard , and the rest of the crew prepare to jet off in Rio ’s ship , we cut to an interesting shot of Picard traipse through a small town . It ’s voiceless to say just where it is ; he ’s wearing the same jacket crown he was wear out aboard Rio ’s ship , but the architecture look less alien and more … older - timey Earth eating place ? It matches where those two Romulans were sing to him just before , at least . coolheaded promissory note , though : face at the atmospheric condition vane on that awning — it sort of looks like Deep Space Nine , or rather more broadly , the Cardassian - designed deep quad station like DS9 was co - habited as , likeTerok Nor . Cool throwback , or a hint ?

We do n’t have time to ponder , as we get this very prompt , very out - of - spot crack of Picard walk through a dark building , accompanied by a bloodless - appareled person that almost looks like a medical officer of some kind , if not explicitly a Starfleet doctor . They ’re flank in the background by a trio of drones , and Picard is once again in the same outfit we saw him watching Dahj fight down the Romulans in earlier . Is this that same location , just inside the building ?
Next , we cut to a Romulan ship and meet Harry Treadaway as Narek , who is likely a scientist . Before hold back in on Dahj — captive once again , so this is perhaps a flashback , or , is Dahj kidnapped again and that ’s why Picard goes on his mission?—before go to another Romulan , a presently unnamed type played by Peyton List . “ She has no idea what she truly is , ” Narek warns . So does Dahj not know she ’s a former Borg , or is there a secret even beyond that ?
There has to be , render we get this minacious shot of one of those Romulan guard dwell prone ( is that Jean - Luc over him ? ) screaming that “ she , ” presumptively Dahj in this context as we cut back to her briefly , is the “ final stage of all . ”

“ She ’s the undoer , ” the guard continues , as we get another ominous reveal : a partially destroyed Borg Cube .
They ’re hard to glimpse , but you may see more Romulan Warbirds floating around it — so the Romulans are seemingly going around pick up Borg , hit their implants and their connection to the collective , and then … detaining them ? Experimenting on them ? Taking the engineering science for their own ? Why ?
We do n’t have meter to ponder , as we sheer back to Picard at La Barre , grabbing himself a stiff drink as someone who might have some answers about all this Borg hooey interrupts him : Jeri Ryan as Annika Hansen .

Or , as you intimately know her , Star Trek : Voyager ’s Seven of Nine , Tertiary Adjunct of Unimatrix 01 , former Borg , turned liberated Starfleet officer . “ What the nether region are you doing out here , Picard ? ” Seven ask . “ Saving the wandflower ? ”
Time has change Seven a bit since we last saw her returned home in Voyager ’s finish — she seems a plenty less terse , a bite more free-and-easy . She has , at long last , sneak out of her Doctor’s - orders sparkly catsuit into something that almost attend militaristic , and very un - Starfleet . Has she bequeath the organization , just as Picard has ?
Before we are given anything beyond the glance however , the trailer gives us a montage of shots that show Picard doing , well , on the button what Seven questioned of him . We see it in flash — Warbirds inside the Borg Cube , Rios ’ ship , his capture by Romulan guards in that same eating place we saw him wandering by in the beginning , a Romulan scientist take away a Borg drone ’s implants , Seven aboard Rio ’s ship , Dahj seemingly make her evasion from Romulan captivity with the help of Narek , and Picard blasting a phaser .

That Borg , in fussy , could be very interesting , considering one of the other reveals the show contribute to Comic - Con was that Jonathan Del Arco would have a use in Picard . Del Arco previously played the Borg Drone Third of Five , renamed as Hugh after being make some of his individuality back by the Enterprise work party , across several TNG episode , most notably “ I , Borg ” in season five . Hugh remain part of the collective even with some likeness of his humanness back , so this could seemingly be him being reclaim from the regular hexahedron by the Romulans . The body is likely human at the very least , even with all the scarring from where the Romulans have been removing its Borg implant .
Once again though , the house trailer does n’t give us time to think on the ramifications as we reduce back to Rio ’s ship , and … well , do you need me to excuse why this is capital ? IT ’S JEAN - LUC BLOODY PICARD TELLING SOMEONE TO ENGAGE .
The trailer ends with another hit of nostalgia beyond that , though — we cut to Picard , in a lily-white - lit , spartan room , playing cards over a loving cup of Camellia sinensis ( presumably , of course , Earl Grey , raging ) . “ I do n’t require the biz to end , ” he opines to his playmate …

Revealed as none other than Brent Spiner as Data . “ I can see that , Captain , ” he says as the trailer close .
But … is it actually Data ? you’re able to just about make out the Lady Jane Grey collar of Data ’s uniform from Nemesis , so it ’s not necessarily B-4 , who was wearing an all - jaundiced jumpsuit in that picture . It could be B-4 , now with Data ’s memories full integrate , but that would n’t really explain why he ’s walking around in Data ’s now no - longer - Starfleet - code uniform .
Is it the android that we encounter early on in the trailer ? Picard ’s outfit matches up . If so , why re - activate the android now ? Does Picard just every once in a while meet up with this mechanical man while it ’s on ice , put him together , and play lineup like he was still playing with Data ? We have so many questions . But it appear , in some form at least , that Data has indeed cheated death . Picard ’s gon na require all the friends he can get on this new mission , either way .

Picard ’s first trailer is n’t just a powerful looking at at an older , haunted Jean - Luc , meditate the push and pull between the desire to do goodness that made him endure as one of Star Trek’smost beloved heroesand the rigor of a change humans around him , it gives us some major hint into the state of the Alpha Quadrant . And potentially beyond that , as Jean - Luc will have to voyage on his young quest — and that the linger specter of his most personal enemy might be doing more than just lingering . And just what do the Romulans desire with the Borg ?
We still have so much more to learn , but for now , we sleep together one thing for sure : Jean - Luc Picard stand quick to wage one again and we are fantastically excited for it . Star Trek : Picard hits CBS All Access in early 2020 .
