Homo floresiensis likely resist about 3’6″ , micturate this prehistoric human roughly the average height of one of J.R.R. Tolkien ’s Hobbits . For years , Flores Man has been referred to by the cognomen “ hobbit , ” give to the species ’ popularity . But one fellowship that owns film right in The Hobbit has decided that the archeologist who discovered Homo floresiensis can not refer to the ancient human by that name .
The Guardianreports that Dr Brent Alloway , associate prof at Victoria University , is planning a free lecture on Homo floresiensis by Mike Morwood and Thomas Sutikna , two of the archeologist who discovered the mintage . But when Alloway come near the Saul Zaentz Company / Middle - earth enterprise , which owns rightfield in the moving picture , for permission to title the lecturing , “ The Other Hobbit , ” their attorney responded that “ it is not possible for our guest to give up generic use of goods and services of the trade wind mark HOBBIT . ” The Tolkien Estate , which owns registered hallmark on the Holy Writ “ Hobbit ” in several companies , was not approached .
On the one hand , I can see a company that has a trademark interest in the Scripture “ hobbit ” worry about that word becoming generic . And Alloway acknowledges that he organized the lecture specifically to co-occur with the release of The Hobbit film and capitalize on the name . But Alloway and his fellow scientist are clearly using the word in a different grocery store - scientific , rather than storytelling - and the very fact that they call it “ The Other Hobbit ” acknowledge Tolkien ’s design of the intelligence .

But disregarding of whether the Saul Zaentz Company is legally obligated to protect its trademark interest in the word “ hobbit , ” it strike me that this struggle could have had a very round-eyed solving . The company could have license the function of the word to the lecture organizer for a token fee . Even without the company ’s blessing , however , Homo floresiensis remains a “ hobbit ” in much scientific lit - and in our nitty-gritty .
