The musician and the actress welcomed their first child together,a daughter named Malti Marie Chopra Jonas, via surrogate on Jan. 15, 2022. She spenther first 100 daysin the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), making it home just in time for Mother’s Day.
Before welcoming their little one, Jonas and Chopra Jonas first embarked on their whirlwind romance in May 2018,announcing their engagementtwo months later. Aftertying the knotin December 2018, the pair were outspoken about their desire tostart a family. Chopra Jonas previously toldVanity Fairthat kids were a “big part” of the future they imagined together.
During an interview withElle, Chopra Jonas told the outlet that Malti has her “wrapped around her finger.”
“I don’t even know how I’ll ever discipline herbecause I just don’t have it in me. I was so close to losing her so many times that she can get away with anything, and I just want to see her happy,” she said.
A few months later, Chopra Jonas spoke with PEOPLE about the “extremely overwhelming” reality of being a mom.
“Every single day you worry about what you can do wrong and what mistake you might make,” she shared. “I look at [my daughter’s] smile, and I’m like, ‘Okay, okay. I’m doing good so far.’ It’s thegreatest thing I’ve ever done, but it’s extremely scary.”
As she’s gotten older, Malti has shown off her mischievous side, eventaking selfies on her mom’s phonein January 2024 that were left for Chopra Jonas to find later.

Early on in her relationship with the “Jealous” singer, theQuanticostaropened up to PEOPLEin June 2018 about her intention to start a family within the next 10 years.
“I am a very ‘live in the today,’ maximum ‘live in the next two months’ kind of person,” the actress said. “But [in] 10 years, I definitely want to have kids,” she added. “That is, it’s going to happen in the next 10 years. Well, hopefully, earlier than that. I’m very fond of children and I want to be able to do that.”
“We definitely want kids, and when the time is right, it will happen,” she noted.

“I think that’s a real dream, and I think I’ve had to grow up pretty quick. With that, you could look at it two ways,” he said. “You could say that was unfair or you could say it’s given me some real perspective at an early age and I’ve seen a lot of life at an early age, and I hope to be able to share that with a kid of my own someday.”

The couple welcomed their first child together via surrogate on Jan. 15, 2022. The new addition arrived in the evening, just after 8 p.m. She was born in a hospital in San Diego.
She spent an extended stay in the NICU
On May 8, 2022, Jonas shared a moving tribute to his wifeon Instagramforher first Mother’s Day,revealing that their daughter was “finally home” from an extended stay in the NICU.
“On this Mother’s Day we can’t help but reflect on these last few months and the rollercoaster we’ve been on, which we now know, so many people have also experienced,” he began. “After 100 plus days in the NICU, our little girl is finally home. Every family’s journey is unique and requires a certain level of faith, and while ours was a challenging few months, what becomes abundantly clear, in retrospect, is how precious and perfect every moment is.”
He thanked the staff at Rady Children’s La Jolla and Cedar Sinai, Los Angeles hospitals, “who were there selflessly every step of the way.”
Jonas later spoke candidlyin an interviewwithKelly Clarksonaboutthe “wild” journeyhe and Chopra Jonas have gone through since Malti’s birth and welcoming her home. “It’s pretty wild. She’s the best. It’s just been a magical season of our life,” he said. “But it’s a blessing to have her home. It’s been wonderful.”
In an interview with BritishVoguepublished Jan. 19, 2023, Chopra Jonas opened up about thethree months Malti spent in the NICU. The actress shared that Malti was delivered a full trimester before her due date and was “smaller than my hand.”
“I was in the OR [operating room] when she came out. She was so small, smaller than my hand,” Chopra Jonas said. “I saw what the intensive-care nurses do. They do God’s work. Nick and I were both standing there as they intubated her. I don’t know how they even found what they needed [in her tiny body] to intubate her.”
“I didn’t know if she would make it or not,” she recalled.
A few months later, theCitadelstar toldTODAYthat Malti is always with her or Jonas.
“She was born, and from the moment she took her first breath to now,she’s never been without one of us, ever,” she said.
She shares a special nickname with her mom
Like mother, like daughter! The Bollywood star has seeminglypassed down her “Desi Girl” nicknameto her little one, a title that the actress earned after her 2008 hit filmDostana, which featured a song of the same name. In August 2022, she shared an adorable snap of Malti wearing a onesie with the name written on it.

In July 2023, Maltiplayed in the ocean with her parentswhile on a family vacation. Jonas also let Malti dip her toes in the hot tub aboard their chartered yacht.
Her mom maintains her privacy
While Chopra Jonas has started sharing more photos of her little one, maintaining her daughter’s privacy online has been important to her from the start. Early on, she would place heart emojis over Malti’s face in photos. Alternatively, the mom of one will post pictures where her daughter is looking away from the camera, like in a Dec. 19, 2022, Instagram post, which featured snaps of Chopra Jonas, Jonas and Maltivisiting New Jersey.
Now that Malti is a full blown toddler, she’s been showing off her daughter’s face more often.
She twins with her dad
On Father’s Day, Jonas twinned with his daughter in a pair of custom sneakers, which feature her initials (“MM”) on one heel and the word “Dad” on the other.

She celebrated her six-month birthday in Mexico
Amidst her mom’s 40th birthday bash — which took place in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico — Malti marked a milestone of her own: her six-month birthday! Tocelebrate the occasion, her parents dressed her in a festive pink tutu and a “six months” onesie before serving up a cake for her that read, “Happy six months birthday MM.”
She’s her mom’s travel buddy
Tagging along with mom,Malti visited New York City for the first timein September 2022. Chopra Jonas had a speaking engagement at the United Nations General Assembly as a representative of UNICEF.
The doting mom posted two photos of her and Malti admiring the view of the city from their hotel room.
“Our first trip to the big 🍎😍🧿,” she captioned the Instagram post.
Chopra Jonas then posted about Malti’sfirst stroll through Central Park. The actress sported a printed romper and a denim jacket, while her little one was dressed in an adorable floral outfit.

The father of one also spoke about the “wonder of looking for places you’ve been to a million times but seeing it through different eyes.”

She celebrated her first birthday with a big party
During an appearance onTheKelly ClarksonShow, Jonas shared that he and Chopra Jonas went all out for Malti’s first birthday.
“We had to celebrate,” Jonas told the host. “She went through a pretty wild journey in the early part of her life, sowe had to celebrate in style. She’s one. She’s beautiful. It’s amazing — the best.”
She appeared in BritishVoguewith her mom
In the cover story, Chopra Jonas gushed about being a mom.
“I feel I have a centre, a sense of calm, because every decision ends up being about her,” she said. “I’ve been really protective of this chapter of my life with my daughter. Because it’s not about my life only. It’s hers too.”

Malti made herfirst public appearanceon Jan. 30, 2023, at the ceremony honoring the Jonas Brothers with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Dressed to match her dad in a cream outfit, she sat on Chopra Jonas' lap to watch Jonas and her uncles make history.
The “Jealous” singer gave his wife and daughter a shout-out during his portion of the group’s speech.

Chopra Jonas introduced Malti to her home city of Mumbai, Indiain April 2023. The actress made the trip home to promote her Prime Video series titledCitadel.
Before leaving India, Chopra Jonas took Malti to the Shree Siddhivinayak Temple, where they experienced a spiritual moment together.
