A few hour ago , NASA ’s HiRISE squad announcedthat it had take on an image of Curiosity during its larger-than-life descent to the Martian surface . That figure of speech was originally schedule to be released at NASA ’s morning press group discussion , scheduled for 9:00 am PT , butSpaceflight 101 and Discover magazineare reporting that the image of Curiosity has been leak . Here is that range , which show the rover settle toward the open of the planet via its monumental ultrasonic parachute .
To be open : this is not a model , a pretence , or an creative person ’s rendering . This is an existent photograph of the actual rover , descending on its actual freaking parachute , on a major planet one C of millions of miles out . It was photographed from an wholly separate spacecraft that is currently orbiting Mars usingHiRISE , the most potent camera we ’ve ever transmit to another satellite . It see somewhat convincing to us , but we ’ll have to wait until the press group discussion to see if it ’s the tangible lot .

UPDATE : CONFIRMED ! According to Sarah Milkovich , science organisation engineer for Curiosity & MRO HiRISE , “ this paradigm was taken 6 minutes after MSL entered the atmosphere ” :
“ you’re able to see the air on the parachute , you’re able to see the hole in the top there , ” explains Milkovich . The inset image in the picture featured here “ has been extend differently so that you’re able to see the chute clearly without saturation … HiRISE has need over 120 picture of Gale [ in preparation for Curiosity ’s arrival ] but I really think this is the cool one . ”
We agree . HiRISE scientist had previously predicted a 60 % chance of capturing a photo of MSL during its descent to the Martian aerofoil . A HUGE extolment to HiRISE Principle Investigator Alfred McEwen , and the rest of the HiRISE squad . What a fantastic accomplishment .
