The above telecasting , from the very destruction of the sequence , is her final send - off .
I ’ll be honest , I knew I was going to be kind of emotional watch the final installment of the Sarah Jane Adventures , but I did n’t anticipate it to hit me quite so heavily . Lis Sladen bring so much heat and man to the fibre of Sarah Jane Smith — making her the double-dyed twin for the cantankerous Jon Pertwee and the moody Tom Baker back in the 1970s . But as an older woman , she becomes this amazing wise man digit to a bunch of younger people , and that same warmth translates into this unbelievable generousness . Watching the end of “ The human being Who Was n’t There , ” I really feel as though I ’ve lose a friend , even though I never met Sladen in individual .
“ The Man Who Was n’t There ” clearly was n’t intend to be a series finale — it ’s a random standalone adventure — but it does showcase Sarah Jane at her right-down best . She ’s at her funniest and her most impulsive in this story , even as Sarah Jane ’s gang of immature the great unwashed is at its absolute boastful and most view - thieving . Sarah Jane has two tyke now , plus Clyde and Rani , and then they also team up up with a random cleaning girl … and yet , it never feels like there are too many reference extend around , because Sladen ’s amazing mien anchors everything .

Spoilers ahead …
It does n’t hurt that “ The Man Who Was n’t There ” is a very ripe story , drenched in irony and silliness . ( Although the timing is not great , since it ’s basically a satire on the of late departed Steve Jobs . ) There ’s a tech mogul named Joseph Serf , who ’s Steve Jobs in all but name , and he ’s unveiling his new rendering of the iPad , called the Serf Board . But it turns out that Joseph Serf is really a hologram , operate by a radical of wretched one - eyed stranger , who are keep prisoner and tortured — yes , just like FoxConn workers . Writer Gareth Roberts , who ’s frequently one of the funniest writers in the Who dealership , milk this situation for all the pathos and all the ludicrous humor you may mug up into 42 mo .
Ordinarily , the screaming but ill - time Steve Jobs satire — featuring the worst product launching in chronicle ! — would be the matter you ’d most want to talk about in this two - parter . But not now . Now , all I can even think about is the fact that Lis Sladen gives one of the best performance of her career — despite the fact that she believably died not too long after take this .

We start off being reminded of something that the writers of the Sarah Jane Adventures only intermittently remembered — that Sarah Jane is one of the top journalist in the country . Sarah Jane scoffs : “ What do you think compensate for all this ? read in wash ? ” And it ’s adorable to see Sarah Jane in her element : barging in , asking objectionable motion , play with her former editor program , and rubbing it in the sleazy pressure rep Mr. Harrison ’s look that she knows Joseph Serf is a holograph . ( Nice shout - outto Doctor Who and the Giant Robotwith the “ I sleep with they bonk I jazz they know . ” ) And then Joseph Serf train his dread hypno baron on Sarah Jane , properly around the time we ’re due for a cliffhanger … and Sarah Jane is like , “ excuse me ? Tom Baker used to hypnotize me every week . I ’m so not going to be hypnotized by a holographic CEO . ”
It gets even dependable in part two , candidly — Sarah Jane is a military group of nature , channel scandalization desirable of the Doctor himself at the idea of buy and selling alien slaves , and maintain them chain up and abuse . She ’s absolutely horrified , and more to the point pee off . And then she meet the cleaning girl , who ’s just as confused as she is , and her trust in humanity is all restored . And then she hatches an “ golden oldie but goodie ” escape plan , make an escape from a computer memory room seem about as fun as anybody ever has . ( And later , she nonchalantly frame the pain U.N.I.T. back on the ripe course , because she ’s Sarah Jane Smith and she can do that . )
And yes , Sarah Jane has “ gifted kids ” — because she ’s the one who ’s inspired them . Just like she inspired all of us .
