Ralph Ineson is at it again . The actor who io9 named as having the “ World ’s Greatest Geek Acting Career ” thanks to his involvement in basically every single major eccentric franchise of the past 20 years is currently sour on another one . While promotinghis new movie , The Green Knight , Ineson mentioned to io9 that he ’s currently working for Lucasfilm / Disney again .
Coupled with the fact that he was verbalize with us from the UK , that mean it ’s likelyIndiana Jones 5 , Willow , or Andor — all of which are currently shoot there . ( We contact Lucasfilm for confirmation but did n’t take heed back . Ineson would , understandably , not elaborate . ) Whatever it is , it just goes to show that if there ’s a major dealership out there , you postulate Ralph Ineson . Which is probably part of the reason why The Green Knight director David Lowery ( A Ghost Story , Pete ’s Dragon ) vagabond him as the titular character in the adaptation of the Arthurian legend , co - star Dev Patel , Alicia Vikander , and Joel Edgerton . Talking with io9 , he discuss the new moving picture , what it ’s like having worked on so many franchise , and how privacy has change over the class . Ineson also revealed one of the major franchises he auditioned for but did n’t get .
Germain Lussier , io9 : Thank you so much for speaking with me today . I really apprize it . I desire to start , obviously , with The Green Knight . How exactly did the cast employment ? Did David Lowery come to you and say you ’re the title character in this motion picture , but you ’re only in two vista and no one gets to see your face ?

Ralph Ineson : I got sent the script and offered the part to do it . And David Lowery wanted me to play that part . So the fact that he does n’t come out that much in the motion picture or the fact that there was a muckle of makeup involved was n’t in any way going to put me off doing it . I was rapturous when I was offer it .
io9 : What about the role attracted you to it and what were you emotional to bring in to it ?
Ineson : I ’ve work on Arthurian poppycock in the past , and used to have intercourse the whole lore as a Kyd . So I ’m always attracted to that sort of affair . And to recreate the Green Knight was a no - brainer really . He ’s a tester of men , as it were . I cogitate the cardinal thing about him , the thing that I wanted to bring in to him , was with that kind of invention and prosthetics and the sizing of the teras that he is , you do n’t really have to vex as an actor about making it too scary or daunting . That ’s kind of done for you . So for me , it was more trying to focus on a number of a playful nature about him . The means he challenge more with a smile and a bit of a taunt than this kind of booming intimidating presence . He has that , but I consider there ’s something lighter and slightly more fun about him as well , which David agreed when we mouth about it .

io9 : Which certainly come across . But the make-up , how long did it take to get on and off ? Did it get easier ? Tell me a footling piece about the operation .
Ineson : Well , it was tough , but I kind of knew decent from the start . As you allege , it was n’t that many day filming overall . So it was one of those that you just kind of gritstone your teeth and deal with the former starting signal and material . But it ’s awesome prosthetic work designed by Barrie Gower , who did a lot of the Game of Thrones stuff . I mean it ’s quite similar to theWhite Walkers from Game of Thrones . And it learn three and a half hours . We got it down . So it was a small morsel more at the start , but we got it down to three and a one-half 60 minutes in the aurora with Jess Brooks — props to my prosthetic makeup creative person . So three and a half 60 minutes every morning and we got down to about an 60 minutes getting out of it at dark . So , yeah , it was n’t [ that spoiled ] compare to … I run with Adam Nagaitis on Chernobyl … his reliever dissolve body make-up take 13 hours to practice . So I suppose I got off quite lightly with the three and a half .
io9 : Yeah , absolutely . Now , obviously your two big scene are with Dev Patel . Did you hombre hang out for chemistry or was it just two groovy player kind of return into it ?

Ineson : Well , I remember … “Two great actors ” thank you very much .
io9 : You ’re welcome !
Ineson : I believe Dev is a great player and yeah , we did kind of just fall into it . There was n’t much prison term for flow out , as it were , we just kind of go into it . But he ’s an amazingly soulful actor and design in kind of the purest way . There ’s no kind of showy chroma about him and the way he fix and the room he does his job , he ’s unbelievably there and present and an sheer pleasure to work with . I actually blank out about the God knows how many pounds of makeup and prosthetics you ’re carry around — contact lense and stuff like that . He was infrangible joy to process with .

io9 : Very cool . Now , this is a heavier fantasy genre moving picture , but it ’s a fantasy genre moving picture . Andrecently I wrote a piece about your careerand how incredible these part are in all these franchises you ’ve been in . It ’s mind - boggling . So I was just wondering , do you choose these roles ? Do they select you ? Or do you ever look at the breadth of your study so far and imagine wow , it ’s been pretty just ?
Ineson : I mean [ laughs ] think about it , it ’s kind of misleading because a circle of thing … when you babble about how you ’ve been in Star Wars or Harry Potter , these kind of things , a lot of those were in a period of my calling where , as a British thespian , not to put too fine a percentage point on it , you ’re kind of cheating because [ they ’re ] have the films in the UK . So getting actors in to do a week on Star Wars is kind of light to do , and Guardians [ of the Galaxy ] and these form of things . So I did a draw of these franchises in tiny , tiny roles . So I feel slightly guilty claiming the credit rating for all these huge franchise as if I play Han Solo and Star - Lord . There ’s a proportion between the two , but over the last few years I ’ve been lucky to act upon with some amazing film maker in a few large genre films , yeah .
io9 : What do you get recognized most far out of all the stuff that you ’ve done ?

Ineson in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.Screenshot: Disney+
Ineson : It depends where I am . The Witch is quite a big one nowadays . particularly now since it ’s been through the teem system . A caboodle of multitude like that . In the UK , the character I represent in the original version of The Office is , 20 years later , still quite a big one .
io9 : Yeah that ’s when it click for me . I was rewatching The Office lately and I was like , “ Oh , serviceman , he ’s so good . What do I know him from ? ” Then Ijust went to IMDBand my jaw just hit the trading floor . I was like , “ Oh my God , Ralph is in everything . ” And yeah , some are smaller persona , but they ’re great . One in particular I like is Star Wars [ The Last Jedi ] , which unfortunately got bring down out and put on the Blu - ray . Were you upset to mostly get cut out of that picture show ?
Ineson : You ’re always distressed to [ get cut out ] especially when there was so piddling there in the first space . But , on the other hand , the whole point was Nina Gold , the casting director , rang me up and said “ Do you require to be in Star Wars ? ” I went , “ Of course , ” sleep together that it was a small part . But like I say , if Nina demand to fulfill six or seven small region in Star Wars she can bring most anybody on her Actors She Likes roll and go , “ Do you want to be in Star Wars ? ” and virtually 90 % of them will go “ Yes of course I do . ” So , yeah , it was as simple as that .

I was told I was play a tall , intimidate British fop — that my data before I go far on lot . So it was absolutely wonderful . I was seven geezerhood old when the first movie came out , so it was such a big part of my younger puerility … to actually be there with my own exercise set of Stormtroopers behind me and the black version of BB-8 was around my feet . It was just too ridiculously cool .
io9 : Oh I consider it . It ’s very coolheaded . Now , besides Harry Potter , Sherlock , all of these thing , on io9 we ’re also large lover ofDark quartz : Age of Resistance , which , unfortunately , is n’t coming back . But your character on it , the Hunter , is so awesome . It ’s such a great character . Tell me a little about your experience on that and what you thought of the final show .
Ineson : I loved [ that ] show . Yeah , it was great . The experience of doing those kind of jobs is , manifestly , just doing ADR session . You ’re make on your own , actor - Isaac Mayer Wise , which is fine . I do a lot of voice work anyway , so it ’s not something I feel uncomfortable with . But it was great playfulness to do , although actually I think I made some choice which were n’t too good for my pharynx in the first session I recorded . I come alive up the next day with it pain little bit and then thought “ Oh , I ’ve get down about four more sessions . ” [ Laughs ] So yeah , I probably made some slightly unwise option , but I recall he come over as a pretty otherworldly character , which is the full point .

io9 : A mickle of these franchises , I know you said you sense hangdog arrogate to be part of them , but you are part of them and they ’re so secretive — Marvel , Game of Thrones , Star Wars — that even if you have a small part , you ’re not allow to really blab out about it . So I was curious , what ’s that been like ? And is there any kind of difference in the story of secrecy between these at all ?
Ineson : Yeah , grade of secrecy have develop over the old age . I mean , the first time I worked on Harry Potter , it seemed horrid to everybody that there were random searches at the studio apartment gates for people take any prop or anything off hardening . That was almost , “ Oooh , giving studio is come heavy . ” But , you know , at the import I ’m run for Lucasfilm / Disney and the levels of surety on that are just incredible . We obviously have very serious covid protocols and all that . But yeah , you have to have private accounts to get at any call weather sheet , all these kind of things . So the security measure has go up and the silence , massively . We get lectures , we have to attend briefing about security and not share thing and all of this — certificate has go up a hatful .
[ notice : As remark above , I did inquire to which project Ineson was consult to here and he say he could n’t say . ]

io9 : Now , I live you said you are kind of shoehorned in to some of these task because you live in the UK and a lot of these things are filming in the UK . But beyond that , do you as a lover find yourself drawn to these task ? I mean , obviously , you said you wish Star Wars growing up , but do you watch these vast franchises and stuff on your own sentence , too ? Are you a fan ?
Ineson : Some of them . More through my kids growing up , to be good . Marvel and that kind of thing . They ’re not necessarily my choice if I was to have the choice . But , as parent well know , you do n’t always have the selection . So I ’d say I would n’t be a musical style rooter as much as I am other types of film .
io9 : Right . OK , then I do n’t know if you ’re going to answer this , but you apparently have experience with this . All these franchises have their own kind of fandom . Be it online , be it at conventions … have you seen any kind of difference in the fandoms between the franchises , or are there any that are particularly really , really kind to you that you really apprize , or anything like that ?

Ineson : I think I ’ve been care for really nicely by all of them . I think the only one where , I guess , I play a character that you could really hate would be Game of Thrones . But even with that , obviously , the show’spopulated by despicable characters . The fans just love your involution with it . I ’ve had nothing but love from Harry Potter and Game of Thrones and Star Wars , all the franchises . It ’s astonishing , just the worldwide exponent of these franchises now to bring multitude together and inspire them , constantly . It ’s intellect - fuck up , really , and you ’re just doing your normal job really . At times you do n’t quite apprise how far the stretch of what you ’re doing is .
io9 : Out of all the franchises you have done , I think there are two that resist out that you have n’t , which are the DC Universe and Doctor Who . I feel like how have you not been on a doc Who at some decimal point ? So I was wondering if you want to be in those sort of things and what are your thoughts on why you have n’t been ?
Ineson : Yeah , I have in mind , I ’m not a completist . [ laughs ]

io9 : So you do n’t have a poster on your wall of a checklist ?
Ineson : By accident , I basically have done them all . But yeah I ’d love to do something in the DC Universe . That would be nerveless . And what was the other one you said ?
io9 : Doctor Who .

Ineson : Oh , Doctor Who . That ’s the slightly weird one . I did auditory modality geezerhood ago forthe episode when David Tennant appearsas Doctor Who and I think I number nigh but did n’t get it , but I have n’t really been called back ever since . So maybe I did a really bad audition and just intend it was good . So no I have n’t been called but plainly , I ’d love to work on Doctor Who .
io9 : That ’s great . And the last matter before I wrap up , and this has been so nerveless and so big to verbalise with you . I get it on that one of the other things you have coming up is reuniting withWitch managing director Robert Eggersfor The Northman , which I ’m indisputable is obviously fairly secretive , too . But I was marvel what you could tell me about that film ?
Ineson : Well , we shot in Belfast mostly all of last yr … I add up in for just a few days towards the end of the motion picture . I play a Viking from Ukraine , a Ru ’ Viking . I think it ’s going to be really sensational . I find out a four - min little segment that they put together whilst we were out there in Belfast and I kind of walk away with about 10 images burned into my mind . It ’s absolutely stunning . Having Rob Eggers and [ cinematographer ] Jarin Blaschke work together — and Craig Lathrop , a [ production ] interior designer they work with — the three of them and the world they make , it ’s absolutely immense because obviously , they ’re working with tremendously bigger budgets than when I play with them first on The Witch . So , yeah , it ’s absolutely stunning to see . And I ca n’t wait for people to see it . Alexander Skarsgård is amazing in the instant I ’ve seen . It ’s unbelievable .

you could see Ralph Ineson in field of operations the right way now in The Green Knight , or onbasically any pelt servicein one of your favored modernistic franchises .
