Even for sailor with decades of experience , the ocean can be daunting . Abby Sunderland , a 16 - year - old Californian attempting to circle the globe by herself , take the challenge head - on , but as of this dawning she ’s missing in the Indian Ocean . UPDATE .
Abby set off from California in her 40 - ft boat on January 23 with the intention of continuously sailing around the world . expert problems have caught her up doubly thus far , but this first light , after a daytime of sailing through a harsh storm , she spark her on - board suffering beacon light . No one ’s been able to meet her since .
She ’s in an extremely outback part of the Indian Ocean , roughly 2000 air mile east of Madagascar and 2000 knot west of Australia . CNN reportsthat the nigh vessel , a private sportfishing gravy holder , is some 40 hr out .

The last few days have pretty busy out here . I ’ve been in some rough weather for for a while with winds steady at 40 - 45 Calidris canutus with eminent blow . With that front pass , the condition were light today . It was a nice solar day today with some lighter winds which give me a chance to patch everything up . Wild Eyes was great through everything but after a day with over 50 knots at clip , I had quite a bit of work to do … .
My Thrane & Thrane ( net ) system is down again so I am not able-bodied to send in my blog . The problem seems a bit more serious than the last few time I have had difficulty with it . There is something wrong with the terminal at the back . It is possible that piss got inwardly of it because it has a rough drive back there the past few days with waves crashing right over it . unluckily , if that is the problem I probably wo n’t be able to set up it . At least I still have my Iridium phone so I can still call in to my mamma and read her my bog for her to place .
In a more late update , her parents explicate that they are working with several country ’ authorities to divert a boat to find her ( an air rescue is difficult because of how remote her location is ) . The parent say that she has everything she needs on gameboard for an emergency brake survival situation—”a dry lawsuit , survival suit , life history mess , and trench bag with emergency supplies”—and seem affirmative that she ’s attend on , waiting for service .
The ocean has always attracted adventurers , and Abby Sunderland is one of them , without a incertitude . Though this distressing turn will likely evoke some people to admonish Abby ’s parents for allow her embark on the journey in the first place , they ’ll be ill-timed to do so . Abby ’s safely manoeuver her ship for 4 months already , showing an ability and passion that few of us will ever eff in our own lives . Hopefully we ’ll make it there soon to help oneself her out .
